Welcome to a shortened edition of “What’s in My Camera Bag”, 2020 edition. This time, it’s more about the top cameras and lenses I like to use and less on every piece of gear I have. I once did a post like this in 2011, but I’ve since switched blogging software and have been on a long hiatus with professional photography and blogging. Back then, I didn’t have nearly the equipment I do now, so for those of you starting out, just remember that it takes time…we all have to start somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the lenses shown here have been in my collection for many years, but there are some new editions since last year that I wanted to share with anyone that is looking to purchase some new gear or simply build up their collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon 5D Mark IV<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I recently shot a wedding in August 2019 and bought this to use as my primary body<\/strong> and has many improvements over the previous 5D Mark III, such as more auto-focus points, quieter shutter release, and touch screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was my main camera body from 2012 to 2019. It’s an excellent camera that I still use a backup for weddings and other events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon Battery Grip BG-E20<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This was purchased as part of a 5D Mark IV combo package. It helped tremendously during the last wedding I shot. I was able to shoot for 8-10 continuous hours without changing batteries. This grip also makes shooting portrait orientation much easier, as your hand isn’t twisted around the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Using flash is one of those skills that can take some time to master, but it’s well worth the effort. Flash photography can really add depth and dynamic lighting to your photography. I primary use flash during wedding receptions and anytime fill lighting is needed. I believe there is a newer model too, so be sure to check out both models to see what suits your needs. I personally haven’t used the newer model, as I’ve owned these for almost ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon 85mm f\/1.4L IS<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This lens was also a recent purchase in 2019. After eyeing the 85mm 1.2 for about 8 years, I was so excited about the release of the 1.4 with IS. Considering it’s $500 cheaper than the 1.2, I believe it to be an excellent replacement that also has great sharpness and color. There is also an f\/1.8 version<\/a> of this lens for $350 for those looking to save some money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon Macro 100mm f\/2.8L IS<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This has been a workhorse of a lens that I’ve owned since 2011. This is one of the first affordable L-series lenses at under $1000 I suggest to other photographers. You simply can’t go wrong with a solid macro lens\u2026it can even double as a portrait lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon 135mm f\/2.0L<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dubbed the “Lord of the Red Rings”, I don’t believe any other lens has held its value much like this gem. For about $1000, this is one of my absolute favorite portraits lenses. It might not have the modern coating or features of newer lenses, but there is just something about the look you get with this that can’t be explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon 50mm f\/1.2L<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before I owned the 85mm or 135mm, this was almost permanently attached to my camera. If you don’t have the budget to shell out $1500 for this, there is a f\/1.4 version<\/a> for $350 that I owned for a long time before this and is in some ways just as good as the 1.2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canon 16-35mm f\/4L IS<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, the 16-35 wide angle. This is a very niche lens and my only zoom. I use it almost exclusively for landscape or architecture, but sometimes for weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
